Wedding Planning Guide
Finding the right song is one of the most personal decisions you'll make. Here are the songs couples in Ireland are actually choosing — and what makes each one work on a dance floor.
Your first dance song sets the tone for your entire wedding reception. It's the moment every guest is watching, every camera is pointed at you, and you want to feel completely comfortable — not anxious about whether the tempo is too fast or the lyrics are awkward mid-chorus.
We've put together this list based on the songs couples actually bring to their lessons at First Dance Academy, across Cork and Dublin. These aren't algorithmically generated picks — they're the songs that work beautifully on a dance floor and that choreograph well for non-dancers.
We've organised them by mood and genre so you can find something that fits your day. Each section includes a note on tempo and why that song in particular tends to work well in a first dance setting.
Timeless Choices
Songs with staying power. These have been first dance choices for decades because the lyrics are unambiguous, the melodies are beautiful, and they feel right in a wedding setting.
| # | Song | Artist | Tempo |
|---|---|---|---|
| 01 | Perfect | Ed Sheeran | Slow waltz |
| 02 | All of Me | John Legend | Slow |
| 03 | A Thousand Years | Christina Perri | Slow |
| 04 | Make You Feel My Love | Adele | Slow |
| 05 | At Last | Etta James | Slow jazz |
| 06 | Can't Help Falling in Love | Elvis Presley | Slow |
| 07 | The Way You Look Tonight | Frank Sinatra | Medium swing |
| 08 | Thinking Out Loud | Ed Sheeran | Medium slow |
Choreography note: "Perfect" and "A Thousand Years" are consistently the most popular choices at FDA. Both have a natural slow-waltz feel that makes learning basic movements very achievable in a single session, even with no prior dance experience.
Contemporary Picks
Current choices that feel personal and fresh without being too niche for a wedding floor. These are songs guests will recognise and enjoy too.
| # | Song | Artist | Tempo |
|---|---|---|---|
| 01 | Die With A Smile | Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars | Slow |
| 02 | you&i | will.i.am | Medium slow |
| 03 | Golden Hour | JVKE | Medium |
| 04 | Lover | Taylor Swift | Medium slow |
| 05 | Marry You | Bruno Mars | Upbeat |
| 06 | Speechless | Dan + Shay | Slow |
| 07 | From the Ground Up | Dan + Shay | Slow |
| 08 | Forever & Always | Parachute | Medium slow |
Choreography note: "Marry You" is the wildcard here — it's upbeat enough that it needs a slightly different approach than a slow romantic number, but couples who choose it consistently say their reception energy was completely transformed. Worth discussing with your choreographer before committing.

If a mainstream pop ballad doesn't feel like you, these choices are personal without being obscure. All choreograph beautifully.

Practical Guidance
The song matters — but so does how it works on a dance floor. Here's how to think about it.
Don't pick a song because it's "easy to dance to." Pick the song that means something to you both. A good choreographer will work with whatever you choose — that's their job.
Very fast songs are harder to choreograph for beginners. Very slow songs can feel long without structure. Medium-slow tends to work best — enough time to move gracefully, not so fast it becomes stressful.
Many couples choose a song based on the chorus and haven't fully listened to the verses. Some lyrics that seem fine in isolation can feel awkward when everyone in the room is listening intently.
Most first dances work best at 2.5 to 3.5 minutes. A 5-minute song can feel very long when you're the centre of attention. Talk to your DJ about fading it out at a natural point.
Once you have your song, book your lesson. A 2.5-hour session is enough time for most couples to have a complete, comfortable choreography — regardless of experience. The song you bring in is the starting point.
First Dance Academy Ireland
Submit your song and we'll generate a personalised choreography preview — set to your actual track — in about 10 minutes. No commitment, no experience needed.
See Your Choreography PreviewThis list covers popular choices — it's not exhaustive. We work with whatever song you bring. If you have something specific in mind, the choreography preview tool will show you exactly how it translates to movement before you commit to anything.
Slightly — a very fast tempo will take more work. But no song is off the table. 95% of couples who come to First Dance Academy have never danced before. That's precisely who the lessons are designed for.
Ideally have your song chosen at least 6 weeks before your wedding date. This gives time to book your lesson, learn the choreography comfortably, and practice without pressure. Last-minute bookings are possible but not ideal.
First Dance Academy has studios in Cork (primary) and Dublin. We also offer online lessons for couples based elsewhere in Ireland or abroad. Cork details here and Dublin details here.
