Most couples need just one wedding dance lesson to learn a complete first dance routine. Some choose a second session to refine or add more complex moves, but one focused lesson is enough for the majority.
Couples ask this question early — usually right after they’ve decided they want to do something with their first dance but before they’ve looked into it properly.
We’ve worked with hundreds of couples across Ireland, most of whom started with no dance experience at all. Here’s what we’ve learned.
The short answer
For most couples, one session is enough.
That’s not a sales line — it’s what we see consistently. A focused 2.5-hour private lesson, properly prepared for, gives the majority of couples a complete choreography they can perform confidently on their wedding day. You can view our packages here.
The reason most people assume they’ll need more is that they’re picturing a traditional dance class model — weekly lessons building up over months. That’s not how First Dance Academy works, and it’s not how most couples actually learn a first dance.

What actually determines how many lessons you need
There are three real variables:
Your timeline. If your wedding is in six weeks, one session is almost certainly enough. If you have six months, you might choose to do two — not because you need to, but because you want more time with the choreography.
Your song. A slow waltz with a simple structure is easier to choreograph around than an upbeat track with an unusual tempo. We work with any song, but the complexity of the choreography varies.
Your comfort level. Couples who want a simple, elegant routine — confident footwork, good posture, a few natural movements — consistently get there in one session. Couples who want something more impressive, with lifts or complex patterns, occasionally benefit from a second session to polish it.
What most couples actually do
The majority of couples who come to First Dance Academy book one session and don’t need another.
A smaller number come back for a second session — usually because they want to add something to the routine, or because they filmed themselves practising and spotted something they wanted to fix. That second session is optional, not assumed.
A very small number do the online course instead of a studio session — which runs over four to six weeks and involves regular video feedback from their choreographer. This suits couples who can’t get to a studio, or who prefer to learn at their own pace.
What about practising at home?
Every couple who does a studio session leaves with access to their personal online tutorial — a video of their complete routine that they can use to practise at home between the session and the wedding.
This is what makes one session genuinely sufficient. The studio session builds the choreography. The tutorial locks it in. Most couples practise a few times a week in their living room for the weeks leading up to the wedding and arrive on the day feeling completely ready.
When should you book?
Ideally four to eight weeks before the wedding. That gives you time to practise properly after the session without the choreography feeling distant by the time the day arrives.
That said, we regularly work with couples who come to us with two or three weeks to go. It’s tight but absolutely workable — the session still happens, the tutorial still exists, and couples still dance well.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is one wedding dance lesson really enough? Yes — for most couples, one focused 2.5-hour session combined with home practice using their online tutorial is enough to feel completely confident on the day.
Can we learn a first dance in a week? Yes. We regularly work with couples on tight timelines. One session is all it takes — the sooner you book, the more time you have to practise.
What if we have no dance experience? Most couples who come to us are complete beginners. No experience is needed — our approach is designed specifically for non-dancers.
Do you offer wedding dance lessons in Dublin and Cork? Yes — we have studios in both Dublin and Cork. We also offer a choreographer-led online course for couples based anywhere in Ireland or worldwide.
The bottom line
